Moving House Soon? Move out the Right Way.
Prepare Your House for the Move
August 2017
Firstly, congratulations on your new home! A new house offers so many exciting opportunities – upsizing, a new neighbourhood, the chance to redecorate, an extra bedroom or a bigger kitchen.
But before you move into your new home, you must prepare to move out of your current home. If you’ve sold your home, you need to make sure you’re leaving the house in a clean and reasonable state for the new owners to move in.
Un-vacuumed floors, undusted window sills, blocked gutters and overgrown lawns are a big no-no. How would you feel moving into your new home to find it unkempt and in a state of disarray?
You should leave your home in the state that you expect your new home to be when you move in. Here’s what you should focus on to make sure your home is in tip top shape before you move out.
1. Dust all surfaces
This includes inside and on top of shelving units, cupboards and wardrobes, as well as window sills, shelves and light fittings.
2. Vacuum everywhere
This is a no brainer, but be sure to vacuum all rooms in the house, and inside wardrobes. Check your ceilings for spider webs and clear those with the vacuum as well.
3. Air out the house
Open all the windows (and some doors as well), and open all cupboards and wardrobes to give the house a good air-out. This should clear any musty or dusty smells before the new owner moves in.
4. Redirect your mail
There’s nothing more annoying than moving into a new home and finding mail addressed to previous owners piling up in your letterbox. Don’t be that person! Make sure your redirect your mail to your new address. You can even let the new owners know of your new address in case old friends send you something unaware that you’ve moved, so that they can send it on to you.
5. Clean your gutters
Clear out all blocked and clogged gutters and drainpipes to ensure the house is left in a pristine condition. Be sure to check your new home’s gutters and drainpipes as well, as they might need some attention before you move in. The best thing to do is install gutter guards once the gutters have been cleaned. This will keep your gutters debris free long-term, and will only allow free flowing water to run through your drains.
