Disconnection of Utilities before You Move
Before you move home, you’ll need to make a list of all the things you need to do before moving day. This list is going to be quite long, but each item will be as important as the next. Organising a relocation company, figuring out what to do with the kids and the dog on the day, redirecting mail and of course disconnection of power and gas before you move house.
As well as disconnecting utilities at the house you’re moving out of, you should take this time while you’re speaking to your providers to organise getting these services connected and your new home.
It’s important to organise this in advance, otherwise you might find yourself paying expenses at both houses, or without any electricity in your new home. Planning ahead will reduce stress and expenses associated with moving home.
Disconnecting your utilities is also a great time to consider your current provider, and shop around to see if you can find a better deal. Research electricity comparison tools to see if what you’re paying is in line with market rates.
However, you may find you’ll have to bay an early termination fee if you are still within contract with your current provider. Again giving enough notice, you may be able to avoid other fees associated with ending a contract. There is of course the option to simply transfer your contract to your new address.
When you do call to organise the disconnection, call with plenty of notice, and request that the utilities be disconnected the day after you move out. This means you’ll still have services running the day you are moving out.
