Moving home is often an excellent time to start afresh. Careful planning of your relocation in a thorough, systematic manner, you will minimize the disruption to your family. To help you achieve a smooth, trouble- free relocation, we have included a moving checklist as part of your removal plan.
We also have available the various notification forms you will most probably require during the whole “changeover” process. This will save you the inconvenience of having to obtain them yourself.
These are:

- Your Electoral Roll Notification
- Drivers Licence and Vehicle Registration Address Notices
- Change of Address Pads to send to your friends and associates.

Where To begin:
- At this point you may decide to save yourself all of the time and hassle by arranging for John Ryan Removals to handle the total packing for you.
- If, instead, you have decided that you have the time to do the packing yourself, ask your Removals Advisor to arrange a supply of boxes and packing tape for packing and moving small items. It is a good idea to use some thick marker pens to record various room positions and designations in your new home Try to allow adequate time to complete your packing long before our removals team arrives in.
Things To Do Right Now:
- Prepare a list of friends, relatives, companies etc whom you wish to notify about your change of address.
- If you are renting, give the owner or the agent the required notice
- Advise your gas, electricity and telecommunications authorities of departure/cancellation date and arrange for reconnection at the new address
- Advise the Electoral Register
- Arrange a re-direction of your mail by your local Post Office to your new address (Allow for at least 3-6 months duration for this service.
- Cancel House Insurance and cover new house. It is your responsibility to insure your new home as soon as you pay the deposit (Not applicable if you are a tenant)
- Arrange for the transfer of personal property insurance on contents and personal effects to your new home
- Notify banks, trust and charge accounts and securities of your new address. Establish new accounts with letters of introduction where applicable.
- Advise any hire purchase and/or monthly accounts and your life assurance office of your new address
- Arrange for the transfer of medical, dental and prescription records. Inform private medical insurers, ambulance service and breakdown service of your new address
- Change the address on driver's licences as well as motor registration effective the day of the move.
- Advise schools of relocation, photocopy children's school records and carry them with you for enrolment in your new location.
- Cancel or transfer local social, sport, civic, religious or business and memberships.
- Advise your library - 'remember to return those books'
- Try to use up your supply of frozen food and pantry stock – it means there'll be less to move'
- Arrange for an electrician to disconnect any special lights that you want to get rid of or you would like to take with you
- Check with the manufacturer of your refrigerator, washing machine and deep freezer whether the motor should be bolted down before moving, and arrange to have it done, if not being packed by us
- Plan ahead Using graph paper, draw a scaled plan of each room in your new home, and place appropriate scaled pieces of paper to represent each piece of furniture and where you’d like it to be placed at the new address. Give copies to the John Ryan Removalist in charge on the day – it may save you heaps of frustration and time on the moving day
Now is an excellent time to plan a "Throwing away party" Go through your home and garage. Give away and/or ‘garage sale’ all of those items you don’t wish to take with you. Moving home is definitely the best time to discard unwanted bric-a-brac and junk
7-10 days before the move:
- If you are doing some of your own packing, now is the time to start. Make sure to carefully identify each of the packed moving boxes. Clearly label which room they should be delivered to.
- Stop bread, milk, newspapers etc at current address Order the same for your new home.
- Cancel Direct debits for contract services. Cancel contract services (e.g. pool cleaners, gardeners, nappy wash, etc.).
- Finalise outstanding accounts
- Collect all items out for cleaning, repair or storage –fur coats, dry cleaning, laundry, watches, shoes or small appliances.
- Return any borrowed items to their rightful owners such as neighbours and friends etc.
- Tidy garden, cut lawns, remove rubbish and dispose safely of all flammable liquids (petrol, kerosene etc) used in gardening and recreational motors, lamps and fuel heaters
Clean out your medicine cabinet and dispose of unwanted drugs. Discard all
- Cleaning supplies, caustic materials, bottles containing liquids or any other which, if shipped, could damage your belongings
- Bolt down the turntable of your stereo and secure the arm.
- Make arrangements to move your valuable documents, money and jewellery yourself (these items are not covered for loss by the removalist).
- Furniture of great value should be carefully itemised and special insurance cover should be arranged. (Arrange John Ryan Removals to Insure your Goods with an all Risks Insurance Policy for Peace of Mind)
- Make special arrangements for the moving of perishables such as plants
- Arrange for pets to be transported. Animals hate moving so they need special attention (Ask your Removals Advisor about our special ‘pet transportation’ service)
- Arrange for Cars to be transported. (Ask your Removals Advisor about our special ‘Car transportation’ service.
- Arrange to dismantle the TV antenna if appropriate
- Make a list of items that are not to be moved. Allocate an area for the things you are not taking with you
- Arrange for children to stay with friends or relatives on the big day
- If you need any child minding facilities, we would be happy to arrange these for you
- If you foresee any parking difficulties, check with local council authorities at both addresses to ensure that there will be adequate adjacent parking for the furniture removals truck
- Wash and dry your laundry. Take down the curtains and blinds, unless they are to be left in the house
Day Before The Move
- Clear and defrost your refrigerator and wash and dry all dishes
- Arrange access to the keys for your new home
- Arrange to hand over old keys to new owner or landlord via your real estate agent
- If you are a tenant, arrange for a final inspection and early refund of bond security. Likewise with your new address, if you will be a tenant, arrange to be present at the new address inspection with the real estate agent
- If your motor vehicle is being transported, remember to take all of your personal belongings out of your vehicle and pack them with the rest of your goods.
At your new residence:
- Send a relative or trusted friend ahead if possible, in case you are delayed and the removals team gets there before you. They can greet the guys, unlock the home and help to show them where everything is to go.
- Consider changing the locks for your own security and peace of mind.
